Certification Tests – Importance, Process And Preparation Tips

The Information Technology (IT) industry has seen a tremendous growth in the past decade. Today, IT-related professions are some of the fastest growing sectors of employment in the United States. As one can expect, there is fierce competition among IT professionals and one of the best ways to get a high-paying job or move up the career ladder is to receive certification in your field.

What are certification tests?

Certification tests are just one part of the entire certification process, which was created by different global-leading IT companies to help them in the recruitment process. Certification tests evaluate the level of knowledge of an applicant in specific areas of Information Technology such as System Administration, Database Administration, Systems Engineering, Integration, and etcetera. There are also certifications for specific software and hardware products.

Certification tests are important because it allows employers to determine objectively whether an applicant really has what it takes to fulfill the requirements of a specific IT job. This helps resolve past recruitment issues wherein employers after hiring self-taught applicants later found that these people were not as qualified as they had led the company to believe.

To complete a certification process and become certified, the candidate must take a set of tests that measure various fields of knowledge relevant to the target area of certification.

Upon receiving certification, you can now include this in your resume and also add the acronym of the certification after your name. Passing certification tests gives you a definite edge over other applicants and is also a factor that can affect salary. In fact, many IT companies raise the salaries of their employees when they get certified.

While it can only benefit you to receive certification from reputable IT organizations, keep in mind that becoming certified does not mean that you know every single thing there is to know about the area you were certified on or that you should stop improving yourself in your field.

Training for Certification

Responding to the huge demand for certified IT professionals, training schools began popping up to help candidates prepare for various certification tests.

Unfortunately, some of these “schools” are not what they appear to be. There are those who use slick advertisements to draw students to take their training classes, enticing them with the prospect of high salaries and testimonials of previous students who have made it because they attended so-and-so school.

Aside from training centers, the IT companies who developed the tests also provide training resources to candidates.

Generally, classes provided by independent companies are offered as packages to prospective students, the cost of which may include testing fees. Classes are available at any time of the day to accommodate the schedules of working students. One thing of concern about these schools is that the qualifications of the instructors vary greatly.

Students receive training kits and other resource materials like textbooks and software, which usually contains practice tests, simulations and demo software versions. Students are usually required to undergo trial exams after completing each training class in preparation for the actual certification test, which students will take in certified testing centers after completing all the practice tests and paying for the actual test.

You can expect that a certification test to be in a multiple-choice format and is taken using a computer and under time pressure. Candidates will be able to find out their test results immediately after finishing the test. Successful candidates will receive their certificates from the certifying organization and the policies that govern the use of the certification.

IT professionals are not required to attend training classes or review specific training materials in order to take certification tests. They may prepare for the exam in any way they want to. In fact, many are content with self-studying either through an online resource or a book. If you are considering enrolling at a for-profit certification training school, check with the office of the Department of Education in your state whether the school is a licensed technical training center. Get as much information as you can about the school to make sure you do not waste your time and money.
